Japan Ski Trip Packing List: What to Actually Bring
You can rent skis, a snowboard, boots, and full outerwear at most resorts in this database — you don't need to travel with your own gear. This list is about what's actually worth packing yourself, and what we could confirm about rental and payment at each resort rather than a generic list.
What you can almost certainly rent there
2 of 10 resorts in our database have a documented rental price for skis/snowboard or outerwear — see each resort's trip cost breakdown for exact rental prices. As a rule, skis or a board with boots, plus a jacket and pants, are rentable at every major resort we track.
Worth bringing yourself
- Base layers. Rental shops rent outer shells, not thermal underlayers — bring your own moisture-wicking base layers for multiple days.
- Hand and toe warmers, and good gloves. Widely available in Japanese convenience stores and drugstores once you're there, but having your own for day one is worth it.
- Goggles. Rentable at some resorts, but a well-fitted pair you already know works is worth packing if you have one.
- A neck gaiter or buff. Useful in wind and cold, and takes almost no luggage space.
- Sunscreen and lip balm. Reflected sun off snow at altitude is stronger than it feels.
Cash, even if you plan to go cashless
Only 1 of 10 resorts in our database have confirmed cashless payment support (GALA Yuzawa). That doesn't mean cards and IC cards don't work at the others — it means we haven't found a source confirming it — but it's reason enough to carry some cash. Smaller rental shops, food stalls, and older lift-ticket counters in particular are more likely to be cash-only.
Luggage strategy
If you're combining a ski trip with time in a city, consider shipping a ski/snowboard bag ahead by courier rather than carrying it through train stations — see the "Forwarding luggage" section of our cost guide for prices we found for this. Coin lockers at major stations are common but fill up during peak travel times, so don't plan around finding one at the last minute.
